Sagehen Trail Work Day

Kokopelli Bike Club will be holding a trail work day at the Sagehen trail on Sunday, April 19th from 9:00 to 3:00. The work will consist of constructing reroutes around surveyed archaeological sites that the trail currently passes through. For those unfamiliar with the Sagehen trail, it is located northwest of Dolores near McPhee Reservoir. It has a remote feel and passes through mixed pinion and juniper forest and grassy meadows with beautiful views of the La Plata mountains and the reservoir.
Please wear long pants and boots (long sleeve shirts advisable) and bring a lunch (the work location will be several miles from the parking area), water, gloves, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

If you can't make it for the full day, come for as long as you can.

To reach the staging point, head west on Hwy 184 from the intersection of Hwy 184 and 145 south of Dolores. Travel approximately 4 miles and turn right on CR 25. Travel approximately 2 miles to the end of CR 25 at a t-intersection. Turn right on CR X and travel approximately 1.4 miles to the end of the road. We will walk to the work sites from there.

KBC will provide snacks and beverages after trail work. Please RSVP to kokopellibikeclub@gmail.com so we know how many people to expect.

Hope to see you there!

Public Comments sought on Proposed Action for Travel Management of Rico/West Dolores Landscape

The San Juan National Forest is accepting public comments on a Proposed Action for travel management of the Rico/West Dolores Landscape. The area of analysis includes National Forest lands on either side of Hwy145 from north of Dolores, Colorado to Lizardhead pass. Includes Lone Cone, Fish Creek, Dunton Road, Bear Creek, Ryman Creek, and Lizardhead areas.  The proposal includes designated uses for specific roads and trails, and outlines the types of wheeled motor access and seasons of use to be allowed on each. Comments must be received by January 30, 2015.

A public open house will be held from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Dolores Community Center on Thursday, January 15, 2015, to answer questions about the Proposed Actions and accept comments.

The public announcement can be found at http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/sanjuan/news-events/?cid=STELPRD3824556 and includes details on how to comment.

The entire Proposed Action document can be found at http://a123.g.akamai.net/7/123/11558/abc123/forestservic.download.akamai.com/11558/www/nepa/99369_FSPLT3_2395784.pdf .  The document is only 40 pages, including many maps, so it is a pretty quick read. Be sure to see what is proposed for your favorite trails and comment on the proposed allowed uses and other issues. Come to the public meeting on January 15th to ask questions of Forest Service staff.

Trailwork on New McPhee Overlook Trail

Kokopelli Bike Club will be holding a trail work day on the new Town of Dolores section of the McPhee Overlook Trail on SUNDAY, November 2nd from 9:00 to 3:00. This new trail will eventually connect from the Town of Dolores to House Creek Campground and to the Boggy Draw trail system via the Bean Canyon Trail.  A Southwest Conservation Corps crew did an outstanding job of constructing the majority of the trail (see photos) but there are a few hundred feet of tread that needs to be constructed to complete this section.

Meet at the parking lot next to the cemetery at the west end of Dolores.  Please wear long pants and boots (long sleeve shirts advisable) and bring water, gloves, sun hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

If you can't make it for the full day, come for as long as you can.

KBC will provide tools, LUNCH, snacks and drinks.  Join us for a FREE PINT afterwards courtesy of Dolores River Brewery.

Please RSVP to kokopellibikeclub@gmail.com so we know how many people to expect for food and tools.  Hope to see you there!
